Units 7–9: listening, prepositions and sounds
Prepositions of place tell us where something is: in, on, under, next to, between, opposite, in front of, behind. In English some words with gh sound like /f/: laughed, enough, coughed. In other words gh is silent: daughter, thought, night. The sound /eə/ is in bear, hair, pair, pear and rare. Read these words aloud. For the past simple, regular verbs end in -ed (played, visited) and irregular verbs change (went, saw, had). We make negatives with didn’t + base verb: She didn’t go. Questions: Did you see it? Four short texts follow for listening practice. Read each text, or ask a grown-up to read it, and answer.
| Sound /f/ (gh) | Silent gh | Sound /eə/ |
|---|---|---|
| laughed | daughter | bear |
| enough | thought | hair |
| coughed | night | pair |
| rough | light | pear |
Text one. Last Friday Yara played with her cousin. They had a board game and they laughed a lot. Text two. Karim didn’t go to the museum because he was ill. He stayed at home and drew a baboon.
Text three. Omar was riding his skateboard when it started to rain. He ran home. Text four. In the shop there is a doll’s house between a robot and a teddy.
laughed, enough, coughed. bear, hair, pair, pear, rare.
Listening and sounds. A grown-up reads the four texts aloud. The child says who played with a cousin (Yara), who stayed at home (Karim), what Omar was riding (a skateboard) and what is between the robot and the teddy (a doll’s house). Then the child reads six gh and /eə/ words aloud and writes the three that have an /f/ sound.
