Explanation
Pictures help us to follow a story. They show the setting: where and when the story happens. They show the characters and how they feel, for example from their faces. They also show the order of events. At the end, we think about the message. Everybody feels afraid of something sometimes, and that is normal. When we face a fear, we can breathe slowly, ask a grown-up for help and take one small step. Being brave does not mean having no fear. It means trying with a kind friend beside you.
Worked examples
Ramy is on the beach in Alexandria. He is afraid of the deep water, and his hands are cold. His dad sits next to him and says that he can go slowly. Ramy breathes slowly and walks into the water with his dad, in the shallow part. At the end of the day he swims a little by himself, and he feels proud.
Look at the four pictures. Ramy is afraid of deep water. Listen to the story.
Hoda
Where is the story, Adel?
Adel
It is on a beach. I can see the waves.
Hoda
How does Ramy feel in the first picture?
Adel
He is afraid. Look at his face and his hands.
Hoda
And in the last picture?
Adel
He is proud. He has a big smile.
Listen. Hoda and Adel talk about the pictures.
Read the picture story on pages 42 and 43 of your book. Find the setting in the first picture. Look at the faces in the pictures and say how the girl feels at the start and at the end.
Read the folk tale ‘Little Deer in the Forest’ on page 44 and the next page. Tell a grown-up: Which animals are in it? Who helps? How does the main character feel at the end, and why?
Now you. Tell a grown-up about a time when you faced a fear.
