GoalTell conservation, preservation, restoration and sustainability apart, and choose ways to protect resources.

Explanation
There are several ways to protect resources. Conservation means using less and wasting nothing, for example turning off a tap and reusing paper. Preservation means keeping a special place as it is. Ras Mohammed in Sinai is a protected area where coral reefs and sea life are kept safe. Restoration means helping a damaged place recover, such as planting trees where a forest was cut. Sustainability means meeting today’s needs without spoiling the future. Reducing, reusing and recycling are three habits that help. Everyone can do something, and people can argue from evidence about the best choice for a place. Good choices think about water, air, soil, living things and other people.
Idea
Example
conservation
turn off the tap
preservation
a protected reef
restoration
plant trees again
Worked examples
Action
Idea
using both sides of the paper
conservation
making a nature reserve with no building
preservation
planting palms along a bare road
restoration
Match each action to its idea.
30 pupils→× 2 sheets = 60 a day→× 5 days = 300
A class of 30 pupils each saves 2 sheets of paper a day. Together they save 30 × 2 = 60 sheets a day, and 60 × 5 = 300 sheets in a 5-day week.
Habit
Example
reduce
use a cloth bag
reuse
refill a bottle
recycle
send old paper to be remade
Reduce, reuse, recycle: three habits that spare resources.
Class activity
School plan (a grown-up helps). Choose one resource, such as water or paper, at your school. Count how it is used for one day, then write three ways to waste less. Decide how you will check whether your plan works next week.
Practice
1
What is the difference between conservation and preservation?
Conservation is using resources wisely; preservation is keeping a place as it is.
2
Planting trees where a forest was cut is which idea?
Restoration.
3
12 pupils each save 3 sheets of paper. How many sheets do they save?
12 × 3 = 36 sheets.
4
Give one way your family can use water wisely.
For example: turn off the tap while brushing teeth, or reuse water for plants.
