A bean in light, a bean in dark

Discovery Education Science P5: Term 1, Unit 1, pp. 15–19
GoalCompare a bean grown in light with one grown in the dark, and explain why light matters.

Explanation

Green leaves make food by photosynthesis, and they need light for it. A bean seed can sprout in the dark because it has stored food. But in the dark the young plant cannot make any more. It stretches tall and thin and stays pale, as if it were searching for light. The plant in the light grows sturdy stems and green leaves. To compare them fairly we use two cups with the same soil, the same seeds and the same water, and the same warmth. We change only the light. Then we record data for several days: height and colour. Notice that the pale plant can be taller, but taller is not the same as healthy.

Youssef records his two bean cups. Cup A is on the windowsill. Cup B is in a cardboard box.

A forgotten potato in a dark cupboard grows long, pale shoots. The shoots are using food stored in the potato and are stretching towards the light.

Mariam’s plant on a shady balcony leans towards the brightest side. Plants grow towards light because they need it to make food.
Class activity

Light and dark test (about 9 days, a grown-up helps). Plant one bean seed in each of two cups of soil, 2 cm deep, and give both the same small amount of water. Put cup A on a bright windowsill and cup B in a closed cardboard box in the same room, not in a hot place. Predict first. Every two days take both out for a minute and write the height and colour in a table. Water both equally. Wash your hands afterwards.

Practice
1
Why do both cups get the same amount of water?
2
Look at Youssef’s table. On day 6, how many cm taller was the bean in the dark than the bean in the light? Is it healthier?
DayLight (cm)Dark (cm)

3
Salma puts a bean seed in a dark cupboard. Describe how its stem and leaves will look after a week.
4
Why can a bean grow a little in the dark even though it cannot make food there?
