From nature to my backpack, and using resources wisely
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
List five things in your bedroom and the natural resource each came from.
For example: wooden bed, trees; cotton sheet, cotton plant; glass window, sand; plastic lamp, oil; wool rug, sheep.
2
Make a two-column table of renewable and nonrenewable resources with three examples each.
Renewable: trees, fish, crops. Nonrenewable: coal, oil, natural gas.
3
A pond has 120 fish. 40 are caught and 25 are born. How many fish are there now? Is the pond being used wisely?
120 − 40 + 25 = 105 fish. Not wisely, because more were taken than were born, so the number is falling.
4
Write one example each of conservation, preservation and restoration.
Conservation: reuse paper. Preservation: a protected nature reserve. Restoration: planting trees in a bare place.
5
Argue from evidence: should a town plant a tree for every tree it cuts? Give a claim, evidence and reasoning.
Claim: yes. Evidence: trees are renewable only if they grow back as fast as they are cut. Reasoning: planting keeps the forest from running short, so it is sustainable.
