Light, roots and tubes
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw a plant and label roots, stem and leaves. Write one job beside each label.
Roots: hold the plant, take in water. Stem: holds up, tubes. Leaves: make food.
2
A bean is 3 cm on day 3 and 11 cm on day 9 in the dark. How much did it grow? Is that growth healthy?
11 − 3 = 8 cm. It is tall but pale and thin, so it is not healthy.
3
Ask someone at home to feel their pulse with you. Count for 15 seconds and work out the beats in a minute.
Answers differ. Multiply the count by 4: for example, 19 × 4 = 76.
4
Write two sentences explaining why a plant cannot grow well in a dark cupboard.
A plant needs light to make food. In the dark it cannot make more food, so it grows thin and pale.
5
Draw the path of water in a plant using boxes and arrows: roots, xylem, leaves.
roots → xylem in the stem → leaves.
