Water and life, side by side

Discovery Education Science P5: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 17–19
GoalDescribe the hydrosphere and the biosphere and sort examples of their interactions.
New words
hydrosphere · all the water on Earth: liquid, solid and gasbiosphere · all the living things on Earthglacier · a very large, slow-moving mass of ice
Explanation

The hydrosphere includes oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, groundwater, glaciers, ice and the water vapour in the air. The biosphere includes every living thing, from the icy poles to hot deserts. A biome is a large region with a similar climate, plants and animals, such as a desert, a forest or a wetland. The two spheres are linked. Plants and animals drink water. Many animals live in water and lay their eggs there. In return living things change water: plants give out water vapour into the air, and animals’ waste enters the water. A good way to study an interaction is to ask: which spheres are in this sentence? A fish swimming in a river belongs to both the biosphere and the hydrosphere. Rain filling a puddle belongs to the hydrosphere alone.

Worked examples
SentenceSphere(s)
Rain fills a puddle in the street.hydrosphere
A gecko hunts an insect on a wall.biosphere
Dew forms on a cold window.hydrosphere
Farida waters her clover.both
Sorting sentences by sphere. Sentences with only water belong to the hydrosphere. Sentences with only living things belong to the biosphere. Some mention both.
desertwetlandforest
Three biomes. A desert is hot and dry with few plants. A wetland is soaked with water and full of plants and birds. A forest has many trees. The kind of water decides which living things can live there.
Water and life in a chain of events: rain fills a pond, frogs and insects arrive to live there, and birds come to drink and to feed.
Class activity

Sphere sort (a grown-up helps). Write ten sentences on slips of paper, such as “a goat drinks from a trough” or “snow lies on a mountain”. Sort them into three piles: hydrosphere, biosphere and both. Swap slips with a friend and see if they agree with your piles.

Practice
1
Name three things that belong to the hydrosphere.
2
Give one example that shows the hydrosphere and the biosphere interacting.
3
Which pictures belong to the hydrosphere? Say the letters.
ABCD
4
Are people part of the biosphere? Explain.
