Earth’s spheres and watery homes
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw the four spheres as four boxes. In each box draw or write two examples from your own neighbourhood.
Answers differ, for example: geosphere: sand, a rock; hydrosphere: a puddle, the Nile; atmosphere: wind, clouds; biosphere: a tree, a cat.
2
Write three sentences that each show two spheres interacting. Say which spheres they are.
Answers differ, for example: A river carries mud downhill (hydrosphere and geosphere).
3
Make a table of a pond, a river and the sea. Write the type of water and two animals for each.
Pond: fresh water, frogs and insects. River: fresh water, fish and birds. Sea: salt water, fish and turtles.
4
A class finds 7 frogs, 12 tadpoles and 5 snails in a pond survey. How many animals are there in all?
7 + 12 + 5 = 24 animals.
5
Write a claim, evidence and reasoning about how the hydrosphere affects the biosphere.
Claim: water supports living things. Evidence: plants and animals drink water and many live in it. Reasoning: every living thing needs water, so water shapes where life can be.
