Dolphins and super senses

Discovery Education Science P4: Term 1, Unit 1, pp. 34–46
GoalExplain how a dolphin uses sound and echoes, and how other animals have super senses.
New words
echo · a sound that bounces off an object and comes backsuper sense · a sense that is much stronger or different from oursmurky · cloudy, so that it is hard to see through
Explanation

Some animals have senses that are very different from ours. A dolphin makes clicking sounds. The sounds travel through the water, hit a fish and bounce back as an echo. The dolphin hears the echo and can tell where the fish is and how far away it is, even in murky water where eyes are not much use. Dolphins can hear very high sounds that people cannot hear. Bats use echoes in the air in the same way to find insects at night. Some snakes, such as pythons, have special parts that sense the heat given off by a warm animal, so they can find prey in the dark. These senses are adaptations. Different animals need different information, so they have different senses. We can compare senses of animals, but we never say that one kind of child’s sense is better than another’s.

Worked examples
A dolphin swims in cloudy water. It clicks, hears the echo and finds a fish it cannot see. The echo tells it the fish’s place.
snakewarm mouse
A python lies still in the dark. It cannot see a mouse, but special parts on its face sense the mouse’s warmth. Heat is the information it uses.
batinsect
A bat flies out of a cave at dusk and clicks. Echoes bounce back from a flying insect, and the bat turns toward it. Dolphins and bats use sound in the same way, in water and in air.
Class activity

Echo test. With a grown-up, clap once in a large empty room, a stairwell or a tiled hall. Do you hear a short echo? Try the same clap in a small room with curtains and a sofa. Which room gives a clearer echo? Soft things take in sound, hard things bounce it back. Write the two results in a table. Keep the sounds gentle, not loud near anyone’s ears.

Practice
1
What is an echo?
2
How does a dolphin find a fish in murky water?
3
A python senses the warmth of a mouse in the dark. Which information does it use: light, sound or heat?
4
In a hard-walled bathroom, a clap gives a clear echo. In a room with thick curtains, it does not. Why?
