Explanation

In a gap-fill with a word box, first read the whole text, then decide the type of word that each gap needs: a noun after a word like more or his, a verb after they, an adjective before a noun. Cross out each word after you use it, and check that the finished text makes sense. For a reading text, read the questions first. Multiple-choice answers must be true according to the text, so find the sentence and compare every option with it. For short answers, write a full sentence, use words from the text and give the reason when the question says why. Look for both sides of the picture: our text shows a helpful AI program and a limit of AI. Remember the main lessons of Units 1 to 3: people are different and that is a strength; calm talk resolves misunderstandings; AI tools are advanced and useful, but people must check them.

Gap clueType of wordExample
his greatest ___nounhis greatest strength
they ___ the problemverbthey resolve the problem
a very ___ programadjectivea very advanced program

Worked examples

Grandmother Fatma has lived in the same street for forty years, but last spring a new family moved into the flat next door. The parents speak a different language, and Fatma felt shy because she could not talk to them. Her grandson Hossam showed her a translation program on his phone. At first she was curious and typed a short greeting, and the program changed it into the neighbours’ language at once. The family smiled, and soon Fatma and the mother were sharing tea every Friday. Sometimes the program chose a wrong word, and this caused a small misunderstanding about the time of a visit. After that, Fatma always asked Hossam to check the important messages. She says the program is a good helper, but the real bond between neighbours comes from kindness.

Read the text. A grown-up can read it aloud first.
Multiple choice: why did Fatma feel shy at first? The text says she could not talk to the neighbours, because they speak a different language. So the answer is: because she could not talk to them.

Zaki is learning to play chess. At first he did not believe in himself, but each win gave him more (1) ___ in his own ability. He says that patience is his greatest (2) ___ . When he and his sister argue about whose turn it is, they (3) ___ the problem by using a timer. Chess has also made a strong (4) ___ between him and his grandfather. They even use a very (5) ___ program to study old games.

Cloze text with a word box (confidence, strength, resolve, bond, advanced). Fill the five gaps in the practice section.
Now you. Say one useful thing and one limit of a translation program, using the text.
Class activity

Mini test. Write a text of five sentences about a person who learns something new with the help of a program. Leave five gaps and write a word box. Give it to a grown-up and check their answers. Then write three short-answer questions about your text and the answers.
