Weekend plans: finishing a short dialog

English Preparatory 3 Term 1, Start Smart and Unit 1 opener: pp. 11–13
GoalFinish a short dialog about a weekend so that every line fits, using past simple questions and short answers.
New words
fair Ā· an event where people sell or show thingsstall Ā· a table or small stand where things are soldcrowded Ā· full of peoplerelax Ā· to rest and feel calmexciting Ā· making you feel interested and happysouvenir Ā· something you keep to remember a place
Explanation

In a dialog, every line must fit the line before it and the line after it. Look at the question first. How was …? is answered with It was + an adjective (It was great). What did you do? asks for an action in the past simple: I visited my aunt. Did you …? is answered with Yes, I did. or No, I didn’t. Then check the verb. For a past question we use Did + subject + base verb: Did you buy a book? For a negative we use didn’t + base verb: We didn’t stay long. Never put a past form after did or didn’t (not ā€œDid you went?ā€). Regular verbs end in -ed (visited, relaxed); common irregular verbs change: go–went, buy–bought, see–saw, eat–ate, meet–met. Finally read the whole dialog aloud: if it sounds natural, the lines fit.

Worked examples
Dalia

How was your weekend, Seif?

Seif

It was great! I went to a book fair in town on Saturday.

Dalia

Did you buy anything?

Seif

Yes, I did. I bought two science books and a dictionary.

Dalia

Was it crowded?

Seif

Yes, it was, so we didn’t stay for lunch. What did you do?

Dalia

I visited my grandmother’s farm. It was quiet, so I relaxed all day.

Seif

Lucky you! Did you see the animals?

Dalia

Yes, I did. I saw fifty sheep and one very loud goat!

Listen to two friends talking about their weekend.
Which question fits the gap? A: ā€œā€¦ ?ā€ B: ā€œYes, I did. It was delicious.ā€ The answer is: Did you try the honey cake? Only a Did you …? question can be answered with Yes, I did.
Find the mistake: ā€œWe didn’t went to the fair.ā€ After didn’t we use the base verb, so the sentence is: We didn’t go to the fair.
Now you. Say two sentences about last weekend: one with a past simple verb, one with didn’t.
Class activity

Weekend interview. Ask a grown-up four questions about their last weekend (How was …? What did you do? Did you …? Where did you go?). Write the answers as a dialog of eight lines and read it together, then swap the parts.
