Explanation

A habit tracker helps us see what we really do. Draw a table with the habits down the side and the seven days across the top. Add your own goal, for example β€œdrink water at break”. Each day, put a tick for every habit you did and a dash if you did not. At the end of the week, count the ticks in each row. The row with the most ticks is the habit you did most often. The row with the fewest ticks is the habit to practise more. A brain break is a short activity of one or two minutes that rests your mind: stretch, take slow breaths or march on the spot. A good brain break has a name, three or four short steps and a reason it helps. Do it in a clear space, with a grown-up near.

Youssef’s tracker for seven days. Count the ticks in the sleep row: 6. In the calm row: 5. In the healthy food row: 5. In the active play row: 6.
Which habit was done least? Calm and healthy food both have 5 ticks. They have 2 days with a dash, so they are the habits to practise more. 6 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 22 ticks in all.

Mariam invents a brain break called β€œCloud Breathing”. Step 1: stand up. Step 2: lift your arms slowly like a cloud as you breathe in. Step 3: lower your arms as you breathe out. Step 4: repeat three times. It helps because slow breathing calms us.
Class activity

Start your tracker. Draw a table with four habits (sleep, calm, healthy food, active play), add one goal of your own, and seven day boxes. Tick each evening for one week. Then invent a brain break: name, four steps and why it helps. Teach it to your class or family.
