Zero to ten, many ways
Discover Mathematics: Chapter 2
GoalShow a number from 0 to 10 in different ways and answer a question about a picture graph.
New words
tally marks · little lines we draw to countshow · make a picture of a numbernumeral · a number that we write
Explanation
We can show the same number in many ways. We can write it, hold up fingers, put counters on a ten-frame, draw dots or make tally marks. In tally marks, we draw four lines and then a line across them for the fifth. This makes a bundle of five. Ten tally marks are two bundles. Pick a number from 0 to 10 and show it in two different ways.
Worked examples
Six is one bundle of 5 tally marks and 1 more line.
Seven counters on a ten-frame: 5 in the top row and 2 in the bottom row.
Eight dots in two rows of 4. Count them: 1 to 8.
Class activity
Show it four ways. Choose a number from 0 to 10 with the child, for example 7. Hold up fingers, put pebbles in an egg tray, draw dots on paper and make tally marks. Say the number each time. Then choose a new number.
