Six and seven

Discover Mathematics: Chapter 2
GoalCount 6 and 7 things, show them on a ten-frame, and write 6 and 7.
New words
six · five and one moreseven · six and one moreten-frame · a box of ten squares for counting
Explanation

Six is five and one more. Seven is six and one more. A ten-frame is a box with ten squares, five in each row. We fill the top row first, then the bottom row. Six counters fill the top row and one square in the bottom row. Seven counters fill the top row and two squares in the bottom row. Write 6 and 7 the way a grown-up shows you, and say each number as you write it.

Worked examples
Youssef counts 6 donkeys at the market: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Rahma has 7 eggs in a bowl. She touches each egg once: 1 to 7. There are 7 eggs.
Here are 7 counters on a ten-frame: 5 in the top row and 2 in the bottom row.
Class activity

Egg-tray frame. Use an egg tray, or draw two rows of five squares on paper. Put 6 pebbles on it, filling the top row first. Ask: how many in the top row? How many in the bottom row? Then do the same with 7 pebbles.
