Eight and nine

Discover Mathematics: Chapter 2
GoalCount 8 and 9 things, show them on a ten-frame, and write 8 and 9.
New words
eight · seven and one morenine · eight and one moreempty · with nothing in it
Explanation

Eight is seven and one more. Nine is eight and one more. On a ten-frame, eight counters fill the top row and three squares in the bottom row. Nine counters fill the top row and four squares in the bottom row, so only one square is empty. Count slowly and touch each thing once. Write 8 and 9 the way a grown-up shows you.

Worked examples
Mina counts 8 bees in the garden: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Here are 9 counters on a ten-frame. Only 1 square is empty.
Salma sees 9 fish in the water: 1 to 9. There are 9 fish.
Class activity

Pebbles in the bowl. Put 8 pebbles in a bowl. The child takes them out one by one and counts aloud: 1 to 8. Then add one more and count again: 9. Ask which number came after 8.
