Stages of energy metabolism and nutrition
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Present the 3 stages of energy metabolism in a table: place, oxygen yes/no, ATP count (textbook).
1) digestion, no, 0; 2) cytoplasm, no, 2; 3) mitochondria, yes, 36.
2
How many ATP (at 38 each) form if 9 glucose molecules are fully broken down?
342
3
4 glucose molecules underwent glycolysis and 1 of them was fully broken down. Find the total ATP.
44
4
Why is it useful for the cell that glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and the aerobic stage in the mitochondria?
Processes are compartmentalised and ATP production is controlled efficiently; also glycolysis can continue without oxygen.
5
Compare the light and dark stages of photosynthesis in a pair of sentences.
In the light stage water splits and O₂, ATP and NADPH form; in the dark stage these are used to make glucose from CO₂.
