Explanation

In 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte proclaimed himself emperor and introduced uniform laws in France — the Civil Code. In 1805 he defeated Austria and Russia at Austerlitz, and after the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 he dominated much of Europe; a Continental Blockade was declared against Britain. The Russian campaign of 1812 was disastrous, and after defeat at Leipzig in 1813 Napoleon was sent to the island of Elba in 1814. He returned for the “Hundred Days” in 1815, but was beaten at Waterloo, exiled to St Helena and died in 1821. After the Bourbons returned, the July Revolution of 1830 overthrew King Charles X, the February Revolution of 1848 set up the Second Republic, and on 2 December 1852 Napoleon III became emperor; he lost power after defeat in war in 1870.

Worked examples
The Napoleonic Code strengthened equality before the law and property rights; many countries took it as a model.
In 1812 cold, hunger and disease nearly destroyed Napoleon’s army.
