The climate of Central Asia and the factors that shape it
Textbook: pp. 38–40
GoalKnow the factors that shape Central Asia’s climate and the types of solar radiation.
New words

Explanation
Central Asia’s climate is shaped by three main factors: the region’s geographic position and solar radiation, the movement of air masses, and the relief. The light energy and heat that reach the Earth’s surface from the Sun is called solar radiation. The more steeply the Sun’s rays fall on the surface, the more heat a place receives, so radiation increases from north to south. Light reaching the surface directly is direct radiation, light scattered by vapour, dust and clouds is diffuse radiation, and their sum is total radiation. About one fifth of the energy coming from the Sun does not reach the ground but is reflected back from the atmosphere into space. Because cloudless days are many, the plains of Central Asia receive more radiation than other regions at the same latitude.
Worked examples
At noon on 22 June the Sun stands about 72° above the horizon in Tashkent, and on 22 December only about 25°; so there is much heat in summer and little in winter.
In northern Kazakhstan sunlight falls more obliquely than in southern Turkmenistan, so the yearly radiation there is smaller.
Class activity
“Torch experiment”: in a dark room hold a torch straight and slanted over paper and compare the size and brightness of the light spot. Use only a battery torch and do not point it at eyes.
Practice
1
Name the three factors that shape climate.
Geographic position and solar radiation, air-mass movement, relief.
2
How do direct and diffuse radiation differ?
Direct radiation comes straight from the Sun; diffuse radiation is light scattered by air particles and clouds.
3
If the Sun’s height is 72° on 22 June and 25° on 22 December, what is the difference in degrees?

4
Why does radiation increase from north to south in Central Asia? Explain.
In the south the Sun’s rays fall more steeply, while in the north they fall at a slant.
