Explanation

Running waters are very unevenly distributed in Central Asia. On the plains, which take up about 70 percent of the region’s area, rivers are very few, while the mountains and piedmont areas have a wide river network. Plains such as the Kyzylkum, Ustyurt and the Aral region receive only about 100 mm of precipitation a year, most of the region gets no more than 300 mm, and because the air is very hot in summer the rain quickly evaporates. In the mountains precipitation is greater and evaporation small because it is cold; snow and glaciers store water in the high mountains. Water running down steep slopes forms rivers that flow out onto the plains. So mountains are where water collects, and plains are where it is used and evaporated: this is the most important hydrological feature of Central Asia.

Worked examples
The Zarafshan is fed by the Zarafshan Glacier and by the ice and snow water of tributaries such as the Fandarya, but it is used for irrigation in the Samarkand and Bukhara oases and becomes much smaller downstream.
In the Kyzylkum, with 100 mm of rain a year but potential evaporation of up to 1000 mm, no permanent river can form.
Class activity

“Water path”: the class traces in the atlas one river that starts in the Pamir or Tien Shan and ends in a desert (blue pencil): source, tributaries, irrigated areas, mouth.

Practice
1
Why are there few rivers on the plains?
2
What is the most important hydrological feature of Central Asia?
3
If plains are 70 percent of the region’s area, how many percent are mountains and piedmonts?
4
Why does a river on the plains lose water as it flows farther? Give the reasons.
