Natural complexes; the natural-geographic districts of Uzbekistan
A natural complex is an area in which relief, climate, water, soil, plants and animals are linked. The north-west and west of Uzbekistan are plain, while the east and south-east consist of mountains and the valleys between them. In the mountains erosion is strong and weathered material collects on the plain, which lay under the sea for a long time and is covered by thick sediments. The plain has a dry climate and very hot summers, while foothills and mountains are cooler with more precipitation. For these differences the territory is divided into two parts: the plain part and the foothill and mountain part. The plain part has 5 districts: Ustyurt, Lower Amudarya, Kyzylkum, Lower Zarafshan and Aral; the foothill and mountain part has 6: Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, Middle Zarafshan, Mirzachol, Chirchiq-Ohangaron and Fergana. This division is practically useful for rational use of natural resources and for locating farming and industry.
