Explanation
In Part I Central Asia was studied as a closed natural region of sharply continental climate in the centre of Eurasia. You learned about its geographic position, borders and exploration history, and about working with maps, scale, time and time zones. The surface divides into plains and mountains; the Turan Plain, Ustyurt, Tien Shan and Pamir are the most important relief areas. Climate is shaped by solar radiation, air masses and relief, and two climatic sub-regions, Kazakhstan and Turan, are distinguished. Waters are unevenly spread: mountains collect water and plains use it; the Amudarya and Syrdarya are the main rivers and the Aral problem is the main environmental tragedy. Soils, plants and animals change with natural zones and altitudinal belts, and nature protection is necessary for everyone.
Worked examples
Review table: “Climate” — Kazakhstan: severe winter, even precipitation; Turan: mild winter, spring precipitation, dry summer.
Review chain: snow and glaciers in the mountains → rivers → oases → irrigation → evaporation and salinisation.
Class activity
“Knowledge train”: the class takes turns naming one topic of Part I and giving one key fact; the train stops when someone cannot answer.
Practice
1
Name the highest and lowest places of Central Asia.
Ismoil Somoni Peak (7495 m) and the Karagiye Depression (−132 m).
2
Name the two biggest rivers and the lake they flow towards.
The Amudarya and Syrdarya; the Aral Sea.
3
Plains make up 70 percent, mountains and foothills the rest. What percent of the area is mountains and foothills?
30
4
Name three features of a continental climate and explain the cause.
Cold winter, hot summer, little precipitation; cause: far from oceans, inside the continent.
