Soils of Central Asia
Textbook: pp. 57–59
GoalKnow the main soil types of Central Asia and where they occur.
The soils of Central Asia fall into four main groups: desert soils, gray soils (serozems), mountain forest-steppe soils and high-mountain soils. The desert zone has grey-brown, takyr and takyr-like, sandy soils and meadow-alluvial soils of river deltas; they contain very little humus (about 0.2–1.5 percent) and are often saline. Gray soils formed on loess at the foot of the Tien Shan, Pamir-Alay and Kopet Dag, at heights from about 300 to 1000–1100 m in the north and up to 1400–1500 m in the south. Gray soils get richer in humus higher up the mountain (1–1.5 percent in light gray, 1.5–2.5 in typical gray and 2.5–4 percent in dark gray); the region’s irrigated farmland lies mostly in this zone. The mountain forest-steppe zone has the most fertile soils, with 4–6 percent humus, and above it come subalpine and alpine meadow soils.
Worked examples
The cotton and wheat fields of the Zarafshan valley lie mostly on gray soils because they formed on loess, are soft and give good yields when irrigated.
Takyr forms a muddy surface after rain which dries into a flat hard cracked crust on which almost nothing grows.
Class activity
“Soil map”: colour the four soil groups from the atlas soil map in four colours on an outline map and find which colour your region falls in.
Practice
1
Into which four groups are Central Asian soils divided?
Desert, gray, mountain forest-steppe and high-mountain soils.
2
What is the parent rock of gray soils and why are these soils good for farming?
Loess; they are soft, productive when irrigated, and rainfall is higher than in deserts.
3
Dark gray soil has at most 4 percent humus and light gray at least 1 percent. What is the difference between these two numbers in percentage points?
3
4
Why does the humus in gray soil increase going up the mountain?
Higher up there is more rain and cooler temperature, the plant cover is thicker and humus accumulates.
