With a parent measure by pacing the length of a path in the school yard or a park (where no cars go) and convert it to metres using your step length.
The answer depends on the measurement: number of steps × step length.

Why is azimuth more exact than the 8 horizon directions?
Because it gives direction in degrees and can show any direction exactly, including in-between angles.
