Textbook: pp. 12–19

New words
knot / junction · tugunrope · arqonbracelet · bilaguzukstalk · poya
Explanation

The word “tugun” has several meanings. In transport it is a place where routes meet and passengers or goods change, such as a large railway station. In a plant it is the spot on a stalk where a leaf or branch grows. In an electric circuit it is a point where wires join, and in a computer network it is a device connected to the network. A traveller’s knot is a way of fastening a rope, useful when pitching a tent or tying a load. In every meaning a tugun is a place where things join.

Worked examples
A stop where several bus routes meet is a transport junction. The joints on a maize stalk are plant nodes.
Class activity

You need: 1 m of thick cord, three 40 cm coloured threads, scissors. A) Figure-eight knot: 1) Cross one end of the cord over its long part to make a loop. 2) Take the end behind the long part. 3) Push the end down through the loop. 4) Pull both ends to tighten: a shape like the number 8 appears. B) Bracelet: 1) Knot three threads at one end and tape them to a chair or book. 2) Braid by crossing the right thread over the middle one, then the left thread over the middle one, and keep going. 3) At 15 cm, knot the end. 4) A friend or adult ties it loosely on your wrist. Safety: never tie rope or thread tightly round anyone’s neck or wrists; use scissors seated and with an adult nearby; pulling rope fast can burn your palms.
