Wood
Wood is a material taken from the trunks of trees and shrubs. Houses, furniture, toys and many other things are made from it. A craftsman who makes things from wood is called a carpenter. A carpenter cuts wood with a saw, smooths it with a plane, drives nails with a hammer, shapes it with an axe and pulls nails with pliers. A tree grows slowly, so wood is a valuable raw material and we should save it and reuse things. For example, washed ice-cream sticks can become something new.
You need: 20 washed and dried ice-cream sticks, a clean paper cup, PVA glue, 2 rubber bands, paint or felt pens. Steps: 1) Check the sticks and set aside any cracked or splintered ones. 2) Spread glue on the paper cup and stick the first 10 sticks upright, side by side. 3) Wrap with rubber bands and let dry for 1 hour. 4) Glue the second layer into the gaps of the first. 5) When dry remove the bands and paint or decorate. Safety: saw, axe, plane and hammer are used only under adult supervision in a workshop; protect your eyes from glue splashes; if a splinter gets in, tell an adult.
