Explanation

To round to the nearest ten we look at the digit in the ones place. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, the tens stay the same and the ones become 0: 243 ≈ 240. If it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, the tens go up by 1: 68 ≈ 70, 385 ≈ 390, 1 995 ≈ 2 000. If the digit is 5, we also round up.

Worked examples
5 674 ≈ 5 670 (4 < 5, the tens stay).
1 995 ≈ 2 000 (the digit is 5, so round up).
