Explanation
Every day we hear many sounds: rain, wind, cars. These are noises. Sounds we can sing or play on an instrument are musical sounds. Musical sounds make a melody (ohang), and the melody is the heart of music.
Worked examples
A door banging is noise; a tune on the dutor (two-string lute) is a musical sound.
Class activity
“Close your eyes and listen”: children close their eyes; the teacher crumples paper, knocks on the desk, then sings one note. Children put hands on knees for noise and raise them high for a musical sound.
