Fairness and honesty: a story chapter
Read Chapter One of the story on pages 66 and 67 of your book with a grown-up. We do not retell it. Learn the words you meet. To create means to make something new, such as a game or a poster. To ignore someone is to not listen or look at them, and that is not kind. Honesty is telling the truth. To give up is to stop trying, but a good team keeps going. Fair means the same rules for everyone, and a team shares the work. After the chapter, ask: Who said what? What was the problem? What did the team learn? Why does honesty matter? Honest people are trusted, and trust makes a team strong. Here is our own short text about fairness at break time.
| Word | Example |
|---|---|
| create | We create a new game. |
| ignore | Please do not ignore your friend. |
| fair | Everyone has a turn, so it is fair. |
| give up | A good team does not give up. |
At break time Seif’s class plays football. Seif is the best player, so he always picks the team and he never gives anyone else a turn. Nour wants to be the captain, but Seif ignores her. Then their teacher says, “A game is fair when everyone has a turn.” Seif is honest, and he says, “I was wrong. Let’s take turns.” Now a different child is captain each week, and the whole class creates a better game.
Was it fair to ignore Nour?
No, it wasn’t. I should listen to everyone.
What will you do next time?
I will take turns, and I will be honest.
Fair-play rules. With a grown-up, write four rules for a fair game at home, such as: Everyone has a turn. Nobody ignores a player. Always tell the truth about the score. Never give up too early.
