Sandstorms and staying safe

Science P6: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 32–36
GoalDescribe a sandstorm, how it can harm people and machines, and how to stay safe.
New words
sandstorm · very strong wind that lifts sand and dust into a moving wallvisibility · how far you can seekhamaseen · the dusty spring winds of Egypt
Explanation

A sandstorm, or dust storm, happens when very strong wind lifts sand and dust from dry ground. It can look like a brown wall moving across the land. There is often little warning once you see it. Sandstorms are common in deserts and in places that have had a long drought. They make it hard to see, so travelling is dangerous. The wind can carry small objects and damage things. Dust can cover solar panels so they make less electricity, and it can fill irrigation canals. It can also hurt our eyes and make breathing harder, especially for people with chest problems. In Egypt, dusty spring winds called khamaseen are an example. If a sandstorm comes, stay indoors, close windows and doors, and ask a grown-up to cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth if you must go out. Protect your eyes, and do not play outside.

Worked examples
Malak’s school is closed because of a dusty wind. She stays in, and her mother puts a damp towel at the bottom of the door to keep dust out.

Seif notices that the sky is brownish orange and the far buildings look blurred. Visibility is low, so he stays inside.
After a sandstorm, a layer of dust lies on a solar panel. The panel gets less sunlight, so it makes less electricity until it is cleaned.
Class activity

Safety poster. Make a poster for your class called “When a sandstorm comes”. Draw four steps with a short sentence each: (1) get indoors, (2) close windows and doors, (3) cover nose and mouth with a damp cloth, (4) wait until a grown-up says it is safe. Add one fact about what sandstorms can damage. Do not draw disasters or people in danger.

Practice
1
Name two things a sandstorm makes harder to do.
2
What can dust do to a solar panel?
3
What should you do indoors when a sandstorm comes?
4
Where do sandstorms mostly start?
