Evaporation, transpiration and condensation

Science P6: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 10–14
GoalExplain that evaporation takes in heat, condensation gives out heat, and plants add vapour by transpiration.
New words
transpiration · water vapour leaving the leaves of a plantcondensation · water vapour changing into tiny liquid dropletsenergy · what is needed to make things change or move
Explanation

When water evaporates, the particles at the top need energy to escape as vapour. They take that energy as heat from the water and the air around, so evaporation takes in heat and the surroundings cool. This is why wet skin feels cool in the breeze. When water vapour condenses, the particles slow down and join as liquid, and they give out heat to the air around. Plants also add vapour to the air. Water leaves their leaves as vapour: that is transpiration, which is evaporation from leaves, and it makes up about a tenth of the water vapour in the air. Clouds are not vapour and not steam; a cloud is made of billions of tiny liquid droplets that float in the air.

ChangeHeatExample
evaporation (liquid to vapour)takes in heatwet cloth drying
condensation (vapour to liquid)gives out heatdrops on a cold glass
transpirationtakes in heatwater leaving leaves
Worked examples
Habiba breathes on a cold mirror and a mist appears. The water vapour in her breath condensed into tiny droplets on the cold surface.
cold candrops from the air
A cold can taken out of the fridge soon has drops on the outside. The water did not leak out of the can. It came from vapour in the warm air, which condensed on the cold surface.
Karim stands near a sprinkler on a hot day. The drops evaporate from his skin and he feels cool, because evaporation takes in heat.
Class activity

Mist and drops. With a grown-up, breathe on a cold mirror or cold glass and watch. Then put a cold drink can on a plate in a warm room and look after ten minutes. Draw both. Where did the drops come from? Tell a family member. Do not use hot water.
