Units 1–3: listening, if, when, at, on, in
In a listening task you hear the text only once or twice, so listen for key words. Remember the rules from the units. For facts we use if or when with the present simple: If you heat butter, it melts. For time we use at with clock times, on with days and in with months and seasons. For feelings we use -ed: I am tired. For things we use -ing: The walk is tiring. Check the sounds, too: th and s, u and a, v and w. Say the words slowly.
| Sound | Words |
|---|---|
| th | thumb, three, bath |
| s | sock, sit, glass |
| u | cup, drum, uncle |
| a | cat, apple, ant |
| v | van, violin, seven |
| w | water, window, week |
Do we have football on Tuesday?
No, we have it on Thursday at four o’clock.
How was the trip?
It was tiring, but I was not bored.
If you put the butter in the pan, what happens?
When it gets hot, the butter melts.
Hagar was excited about the school trip. The bus left at seven o’clock on Wednesday. In the bus, the children sang. The visit to the factory was interesting, but the walk back was tiring. When they came home in the evening, everyone was tired.
Listening bingo. The grown-up writes six words on a grid: melts, tiring, at, on, in, tired. The child ticks each word when the grown-up reads a sentence that uses it. The first full row wins. Take turns to read.
