What is this part for? Buttons and joysticks
Many objects have parts, and each part has a job. We ask: What is this part for? We answer with It is for + noun-ing or with To + verb: The button is for starting the game. The brake is for stopping the bicycle. Or: We use the bell to warn people. A game controller has buttons and a joystick. The buttons are for choosing, and the joystick is for moving. Read the dialog about a games console on page 78. Do not copy it. To describe an object, write: what it is, its parts, and what it is for. Here is our own description of a bicycle.
| Part | What is it for? |
|---|---|
| pedal | moving the bicycle |
| brake | stopping the bicycle |
| bell | warning people |
| light | seeing in the dark |
A bicycle is a vehicle with two wheels. It has pedals, brakes, a bell and a light. We use the pedals to move, and we use the brakes to stop. The bell is for warning people.
What is this part for?
The joystick is for moving the player.
And the button?
You press it to jump.
Describe an object. The child chooses an object at home (a torch, a bicycle, a clock, a controller). The child writes notes: name, three parts and what each is for. Then the child writes 25 to 30 words and reads them to a grown-up, who guesses the object.
