Eco-tourism in Egypt: nature holidays
Eco-tourism means visiting a natural place in a way that protects it. Tourists enjoy the beauty, and local people and animals are not harmed. Activities can be bird-watching, hiking, camping, sailing on a river and snorkelling to see fish near a coral reef. Egypt has many places for nature lovers. The Red Sea has coral reefs. Siwa is an oasis in the Western Desert. Lake Qarun in the Fayoum is a good place to watch birds. Some places are protected areas, where people must follow rules. Read the guidebook text on page 60 and the four holiday ads with a grown-up. Do not copy any sentences. Here we practise with our own words for a nature holiday.
| Activity | Where (example) | What to take |
|---|---|---|
| bird-watching | a lake | binoculars and a notebook |
| hiking | a mountain path | water and a hat |
| snorkelling | a coral reef | a guide and a life jacket |
| camping | the desert | a tent and a torch |
What is eco-tourism, Aunt Mona?
It is a holiday where we enjoy nature and do not harm it.
Can we go camping?
Yes, with a guide. We take our litter home and we respect the animals.
Plan a nature holiday. The child chooses a place (the sea, a lake, a desert, a mountain) and writes a plan: where, what to do, what to take and two ways to respect nature. A grown-up checks that safety is included: a guide, water and shade, and never swimming alone.
