Huge or treasure? Two sounds of j and g

Connect Primary 6 Term 1, Unit 5: pp. 80–87
GoalHear and say the sounds /dʒ/ (huge) and /ʒ/ (treasure) and sort words by sound.
New words
huge · very, very bigfridge · a big cold box for food in the kitchentreasure · gold, jewels or other things of great valuemeasure · to find out how big something isusually · most of the timetelevision · a machine with a screen to watch programs
Explanation

Two sounds are easy to mix. The first is /dʒ/, as in huge, age and joke. We often write it with j, g or dge: joke, huge, fridge. The second is /ʒ/, a softer sound, as in treasure and measure. We write it with s: usually, television, leisure. Put your teeth almost together and push the air out for /ʒ/. For /dʒ/, start with a tiny stop of air, then let the sound out. Be careful: the letter g does not always say /dʒ/. In get and game it says /g/. Say the words after your teacher and listen to the difference.

Worked examples
Listen and say. First /dʒ/, then /ʒ/.

A huge jar is in the village. The joke is in the old language. Usually we measure the treasure on television. It is the age of the huge cage.

Listen and say our sentences.
Say the three words. Which one has a different sound? ‘huge, joke, treasure’
Now you. Find two more words with /dʒ/ at home or in your book. Say them to a grown-up.
Class activity

Sound sort. Write /dʒ/ and /ʒ/ on two sheets of paper. The grown-up says a word (age, cage, measure, joke, television, fridge, treasure, huge). The child points to the sheet with the sound and says the word again.
