Tiny moving particles
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw three boxes of dots for a solid, a liquid and a gas and write one sentence under each.
Solid: packed in rows. Liquid: close but sliding. Gas: far apart.
2
A bean model uses 6 beans in each of 3 rows for a solid. Then 8 beans go to the gas tray. How many beans stay in the solid tray?
3 × 6 = 18, and 18 − 8 = 10 beans.
3
Explain, with the word “particles”, why a puddle of water dries in the Sun.
The Sun’s heat makes the water particles move faster, and some escape into the air as water vapour.
4
Name two things a dot model shows and two things it leaves out.
It shows the arrangement and the spacing. It leaves out the movement and the real shape of particles.
5
Ask a grown-up to show you butter or ghee melting in a warm pan. Watch from a safe distance. Draw what you see and explain it.
Heat makes the particles move more, so the solid melts to a liquid.
