Giving a bottle a second life
Discovery Education Science P5: Term 1, Unit 1, pp. 111–115
GoalFollow the design steps to make a useful object from a bag or bottle, working as a team.
New words
design · to plan how something will look and workprototype · the first test version of a designslogan · a short phrase that sticks in the mind
Explanation
Engineers solve problems by following steps: ask what the problem is, imagine ideas, plan the best one, build a prototype, test it and improve it. Here the problem is waste: how can an old bag or bottle become something useful? A bottle can become a pencil pot or a bird feeder with seeds only for wild birds. A bag can become a pouch. A grown-up does all the cutting, so children draw, plan, decorate and test. A team works best when each person has a role, such as the planner, the builder, the tester and the speaker. At the end the team can invent a slogan to remind others to reduce plastic.
ask→imagine→plan→build→test→improve
Worked examples
Step
What the team does
ask
Our desks are messy. Pens roll away.
imagine
A bottle, a tin or a box?
plan
Draw it and choose the bottle
build
A grown-up cuts, the team decorates
test
Does it stand? Does it hold 5 pens?
Malak’s team puts the design steps in order for their pencil pot, with one team job for each step.
A team of four shares the jobs, so everyone has a part.
test: it tips over→make the base wider→test again: it stands
The test shows the first pencil pot tips over. The team makes the base wider. This is the improve step: a test shows a problem, then the team changes the design.
Class activity
Design time (a grown-up cuts). Choose one bag or bottle. Draw your plan with labels, say who does which job, and write a slogan of five words or fewer. A grown-up cuts the plastic. You decorate and test. Write one thing you would improve.
Practice
1
Put in order: test, ask, build, plan, imagine, improve.
Ask, imagine, plan, build, test, improve.
2
Why does a grown-up do the cutting?
Cut plastic can have sharp edges, so it is safer for a grown-up to do it.
3
A team has 3 children and each makes 4 pencil pots. How many pencil pots in all?
3 × 4 = 12 pencil pots.
4
Write a slogan of five words or fewer to remind people to use less plastic.
Answers differ, for example: “Use less, keep the sea clean.”
