Energy along food chains
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw a food chain with four links from an ecosystem in Egypt, for example the desert or the Nile. Show the Sun at the start and use arrows.
For example: Sun → grass → grasshopper → lizard → falcon (four living links). Arrows point from food to eater.
2
Write what each word means and give an example: producer, consumer, predator, prey.
Producer: makes its own food (grass). Consumer: eats others (hare). Predator: hunts (fox). Prey: hunted (hare).
3
A food web has 3 producers, 5 primary consumers and 2 secondary consumers. How many living things are in it altogether?
3 + 5 + 2 = 10 living things.
4
Look at a rotting fruit or leaf near your home (do not touch it). Write what might be breaking it down.
Answers differ, for example: fungi, bacteria, flies or worms.
5
Explain to someone at home why animals depend on plants, even a lion that eats only meat.
The lion eats animals that ate plants, so its energy still began with plants and the Sun.
