Explanation
Your challenge is to design a solar still that uses the Sun’s heat to turn salt water into fresh water. A good design needs three places: one to hold the salt water, one where water can evaporate and then condense, and one to collect the fresh water. A simple design is a wide bowl with salt water in it. A small empty cup stands in the middle, with its top below the rim of the bowl. Plastic wrap covers the bowl and is held down tightly with tape. A small clean weight sits on the wrap over the cup. The Sun warms the bowl, water evaporates, the vapour condenses on the cooler wrap, and drops run down to the lowest point and fall into the cup. Each person first sketches an idea alone. Then the team compares, chooses one, and draws a detailed blueprint that lists each material and its job. Four roles help: a team captain, a materials manager, an engineer and a reporter.

Worked examples
Idea
Good
Could be better
Karim: bowl and cup
easy to build
flat wrap drips back
Salma: tray
big surface
hard to catch drops
Sketching: Karim draws a bowl, a cup and wrap. Salma draws a tray with a sloping cover. The team likes the tilted cover because drops slide off, and the bowl because it is easy to find. They vote and choose the bowl design with a sloping cover.
Role
Job
captain
keeps time, supports others
materials manager
gathers and cuts, with a grown-up
engineer
leads the building and checks safety
reporter
records each step
Roles: Marwan is the team captain and keeps the time. Hana is the materials manager and collects the bowl, cup, wrap and tape. Omar is the engineer and checks the building is safe. Jana is the reporter and writes every step. Everyone helps with ideas.
Safety plan: the still sits outdoors in a shady-edged spot with a grown-up near. Everyone wears a hat. Nobody looks at the Sun, and we leave out shiny foil because it can bounce glare into eyes. The water is never drunk.
Class activity
Sketch and plan (no building yet). On your own, draw your idea for a solar still. Label the place that holds the salt water, the place where evaporation and condensation happen, and the place that collects fresh water. Under your drawing write 2 or 3 sentences about how it will work. Then share it with a friend, tell one thing you like in theirs and one thing that could be better, and write the materials list with the job of each material.
Practice
1
Name the three places a solar still needs.
A place to hold the salt water, a place for evaporation and condensation, and a place to collect fresh water.
2
In the bowl design, why must the plastic wrap be cooler than the water?
Vapour condenses on a cooler surface. If the wrap were as hot as the water, little vapour would condense.
3
Which part of the drawing is the collecting cup? Say the letter.
C, the small cup in the middle of the bowl.
4
Why is each person asked to sketch an idea alone before the team chooses?
So the team has many different ideas to compare and nobody’s idea is lost.
