Landscape detectives, rivers and deltas
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw a river from a mountain to the sea. Label the stream, the valley, and the delta.
Stream near the top, valley in the middle, delta where the river meets the sea.
2
Write two ways a canyon and a delta are different.
A canyon is deep and cut by erosion; a delta is built by deposition and has a fan shape.
3
A glacier moves 4 m a day. Fill the table for 2, 5 and 10 days.
2 days: 8 m, 5 days: 20 m, 10 days: 40 m.
4
With a grown-up, find a place where rainwater runs after rain (a gutter, a path). Draw what you see where the water slows down.
Answers differ. Sand or mud is usually dropped where the water slows (deposition).
5
Tell someone at home why it is a good idea to plant trees on a bare hillside above a village.
Roots hold the soil, so rain cannot wash it downhill so easily.
