Fennec fox, Arctic fox and bull shark

Discovery Education Science P4: Term 1, Unit 1, pp. 10–18
GoalDescribe adaptations of the fennec fox, the Arctic fox, the bull shark and the chameleon, and say which are structural and which are behavioural.
New words
fennec fox · a small desert fox with very large earspant · to breathe fast with the mouth open to cool downbluff · to look fierce so that an enemy goes away
Explanation

The fennec fox lives in the deserts of North Africa, including Egypt. Its huge ears help it hear insects under the sand and let heat leave its body. Its sandy fur is camouflage, and it pants to cool down, rests in a burrow by day and hunts at night. The Arctic fox lives where it is freezing cold. It has thick fur, small ears that lose less heat, and a coat that is brown in summer and white in winter. The bull shark can swim in salty sea water and also up into fresh water rivers. Its back is dark and its belly is pale, so from above it blends with deep water and from below with the bright surface. A chameleon has eyes that turn separately, skin colours that change, and it can puff up and open its mouth to bluff an enemy. A chameleon is a kind of lizard.

Worked examples
A fox with huge ears stands at the entrance of its sandy burrow at sunset. Big ears and sandy fur are structural; coming out only at night is behaviour.
In summer the Arctic fox is brown and in winter it is white. The colour fits the ground, so the fox is hard to see in both seasons. Its small ears keep heat in.

A bull shark swims in the sea and then up a river. Its body can cope with both salty and fresh water. Seen from above, its dark back matches the deep water.
Class activity

Animal card. Pick one animal from this lesson. Fold a paper in two: on the left draw or write its structural adaptations, on the right its behavioural ones. Under the card write the habitat and one problem the animal solves. Show it to someone at home and ask them to guess the animal.

Practice
1
Give one structural adaptation of the fennec fox and say how it helps.
2
Why is the Arctic fox’s coat white in winter?
3
Seen from below, why does the bull shark’s pale belly help it?
4
A chameleon puffs up its body to look bigger. Structural or behavioural?
