Pollution and using fuel wisely

Discovery Education Science P4: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 40–55
GoalExplain how burning fuels causes pollution, and suggest ways to use fuels wisely and fairly.
New words
carbon dioxide · a gas made when fuels burnacid rain · rain made slightly acid by pollution, which can harm trees and buildingsglobal warming · a slow rise in Earth’s temperatures
Explanation

Burning fuels gives us useful energy, but it also makes pollution. When coal, oil and gas burn, they make a gas called carbon dioxide and other harmful gases and smoke. In big cities, smoke from vehicles and factories can make the air dirty, which is hard for people to breathe. Some of the gases mix with water in the air and can make acid rain, which can harm trees, lakes and buildings. Carbon dioxide collects in the air and traps heat, so Earth’s temperatures slowly rise: this is global warming. The best way to lessen these problems is to use less energy. We can switch off lights and fans, walk or cycle short trips, use the bus, mend leaks and choose renewable energy where possible. So where does our fuel come from? Fossil fuels come from ancient living things, and their energy came from the Sun.

Worked examples
Many buses and cars sit in traffic in a big city. Their engines burn fuel and give out smoke. The air becomes dirty. If more people share a bus, there are fewer vehicles and less smoke.

7 days35
Habiba’s family saves electricity. Each evening they switch off 3 lamps and 2 fans that nobody is using. 3 + 2 = 5 devices switched off every day, so in 7 days that is 5 × 7 = 35 times.
NonrenewableRenewable
Sorting fuels: coal, oil and natural gas are nonrenewable. Sunlight, wind and moving water are renewable. Wood is renewable if new trees are planted and grow.
Class activity

Use fuel wisely. With your family make a poster with five ways to save fuel or electricity at home or on the road. Put it on the fridge or the door. For one week count each time somebody follows one of the ways and show the total in a tally chart.

Practice
1
What gas is made when fuels burn and what does it do in the air?
2
Which two help the air stay cleaner? Say the letters.
