Wood, plants and fossil fuels
Discovery Education Science P4: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 26–39
GoalDescribe wood and plant fuels (biofuels) and fossil fuels, and tell renewable from nonrenewable.
New words
biofuel · a fuel made from plants or other living thingsfossil fuel · coal, oil or natural gas, formed from ancient living thingsdeforestation · cutting down forests faster than they can grow back
Explanation
Wood is the oldest fuel and people still use it. Fuels made from plants and other living things are called biofuels. Charcoal is made from wood. Some plants can be made into liquid fuels for engines. The energy in these fuels came from the Sun, and the supply is renewed when new plants grow. So they are renewable fuels. But they need careful management: many trees grow only a few centimetres in a year, so cutting trees faster than they grow leads to deforestation. Fossil fuels are different. Coal formed mostly from ancient plants. Oil and natural gas formed mostly from tiny sea living things. Their remains were buried under mud and rock for millions of years, and heat and pressure slowly changed them. Petrol is made from oil. Fossil fuels take so long to form that we use them far faster than they form. They are nonrenewable.
Type

Examples
wood, charcoal, plant oils
coal, oil, natural gas, petrol
Made from
plants and other living things
ancient plants and tiny sea living things
Renewable?
yes, if managed carefully
no
Worked examples
A village uses wood for fuel. A tree takes about 20 years to grow big enough. If the village cuts 5 trees every year but plants only 2 new ones, then 5 − 2 = 3 more are cut than planted each year. This leads to deforestation.
plants die→buried under mud and rock→heat and pressure→coal
Coal comes from plants that lived long ago. They died, were buried under mud and rock, and over millions of years heat and pressure changed them into coal.
Natural gas is used for cooking and power in Egypt. It formed mostly from tiny sea living things that lived long ago. It is a fossil fuel, so it is nonrenewable.
Class activity
Fuel table. Copy a table with two columns, Biofuels and Fossil fuels. Sort these into it: wood, coal, petrol, charcoal, natural gas, oil. Add one more example to each column. Under the table write why one column is renewable if managed carefully and the other is nonrenewable.
Practice
1
Which are fossil fuels? Say the letters.
Letter
Fuel
A
coal
B
wood
C
natural gas
A and C: coal and natural gas.
2
Why are fossil fuels called nonrenewable?
They take millions of years to form, and we use them much faster than they form.
3
What is deforestation and why is it a problem?
Cutting trees faster than they grow back. The forest and its animals can disappear and the fuel is not renewed.
4
A village cuts 8 trees a year and plants 6. How many more are cut than planted?
