A strong push, a far car

Discovery Education Science P4: Term 1, Unit 2, pp. 130–144
GoalPlan and run a fair push test with a toy car, record the distances and say whether the data support the prediction.
New words
prediction · what you think will happen, said before the testaverage · the total of the results divided by how many there areevidence · results and observations that support an idea
Explanation

Scientists test ideas. First they make a prediction: a stronger push will send a toy car farther. Then they run a fair test. They change only one thing, the strength of the push, and keep everything else the same: the car, the floor and the starting line. They measure how far the car goes with a tape and repeat the push three times, because one try can be a little different. To find the average, add the three distances and divide by 3. Last they compare the data with the prediction. If the results match, the data support the prediction. If they do not, the data contradict it, and the scientist thinks again. A stronger push gives the car more energy, so it goes farther before friction stops it.

Look at the weak push in the table. The three distances are 60, 70 and 65 cm. Add them: 60 + 70 + 65 = 195. Divide by 3: 195 ÷ 3 = 65 cm. The average is 65 cm.

Salma predicted that a strong push would send the car farther than a weak push. Her data: weak 40 cm, strong 150 cm. The data support her prediction, and the strong push went 150 − 40 = 110 cm farther.

Omar predicted that the car would go farther on the rug than on the tiles. It went 90 cm on the rug and 220 cm on the tiles. The data contradict his prediction. Now he thinks again: the rug has more friction.
Class activity

Toy-car push test. With a grown-up, mark a start line with tape on a clear floor and keep feet and pets away. Push a toy car with a flat ruler three ways: weak, medium and strong, three tries each. Measure each distance from the line with a tape and write it in a table. Work out each average. Do the data support your prediction? Keep the same: car, floor, start line.

Practice
1
The distances in three tries are 30, 40 and 50 cm. What is the average?
2
In the table, how much farther is the strong-push average than the medium-push average?

3
In a fair test of push strength, what do you change and what do you keep the same?
4
Mina predicted that a medium push would go farther than a strong push. His data: medium 100 cm, strong 170 cm. Do the data support or contradict him?
