Review: protecting water, soil and habitats

Science P6: Term 2, Units 3–4
GoalReview how to protect water, soil and habitats, and use the engineering design steps.

Explanation

A habitat must give food, water and shelter. It can be destroyed by natural events, such as fires and volcanoes, and by people through clearing land, pollution and invasive species. The water hyacinth in the Nile is one invader. It is better to prevent water pollution than to clean it up, by treating sewage, using fertilizer carefully, keeping plants by rivers and binning rubbish. Only about three out of every hundred parts of Earth’s water is fresh, so irrigation should waste less: drip systems, moisture sensors and watering in cool hours help. Engineers follow the steps ask, imagine, plan, build, test and improve. A green city keeps parks and wetlands, uses clean energy and public transport, and protects soil. Each plan should name a problem and give a fix.

An irrigation test pours 400 ml. 250 ml stays in the pot, 100 ml runs off and some is spilled. The spilled amount is 400 − 250 − 100 = 50 ml.
A city plan covers a wetland with a car park. A better plan keeps the wetland and adds a bus route.
Farida’s group improves its model by changing two things at once and cannot tell which helped. Next time change only one thing.
Class activity

Planner’s challenge. With a grown-up, choose a place such as your school. Write three problems for water, soil or habitats there and one fix for each. Then say which design step you would use first to test a fix, and why.

Practice
1
Why is preventing pollution better than cleaning up?
2
Name two steps of the engineering design process.
3
A pot is poured with 300 ml and 180 ml stays. How much ran off or was lost?
4
Name a species that is invasive in the Nile.
