Every chain starts with plants

Science P6: Term 1, Chapter 8, pp. 68–73
GoalExplain why every food chain starts with plants and tell a fossil whale story from Wadi al-Hitan.
New words
fossil · the remains of a living thing preserved in rock for millions of yearsbalance · when each living thing in a place has the right amount of food
Explanation

Whether in the Nile or in the desert, every chain starts with plants (or algae). Without them there would be no food for the herbivores, and so none for the carnivores. Each animal in a chain has a role that helps keep the place in balance. If the fennec fox ate too few jerboas, there would be too many; if there were too many, the seeds would disappear. In the desert of Fayoum there is a place called Wadi al-Hitan, “the Valley of the Whales”. It holds fossils of ancient whales that lived in a sea there tens of millions of years ago. The fossils tell us that the land was once covered by water and had different living things.

Karim writes: every chain begins with plants. He finds the Nile chain begins with algae, the desert with seeds, and the farm with wheat. The pattern is the same everywhere.
Wadi al-Hitan is a place where scientists study the fossil remains of animals that lived in the sea long ago. Fossils are old remains that became part of the rock.
Mina invents a food web for a pond near her grandparents’ house: algae, snail, fish, heron. She draws arrows and explains what would happen if the snails vanished.
Class activity

Web invention. Choose a place you know (a canal, a garden, a farm). Write five living things from it in boxes and join them with arrows to make a food web. Then play the removal game: take one away and say how the others change.

Practice
1
Which living things start every food chain?
2
What does Wadi al-Hitan hold?
3
How long ago did these whales live?
4
Why can removing one link harm a food chain?
