Explanation

Now recall Theme 4, Software Projects. In Week 24 a loan, a digital token and text-message records helped small businesses buy cleaner minibuses; we also designed a travel helper. In Week 25 we met the operating system, the settings, installing and removing programs, and free and paid systems. In Week 26 a word processor helped us write reports, and messaging services let people share text, pictures, voice and video with encryption and group chats. In Week 27 we planned a presentation that shares an opinion with the 10-20-30 guide. In Week 28 we built a database with fields, records, IDs, formulas and a vote table. In Week 29 a flowchart planned a talk and a presentation tool helped people understand. Test yourself with the spreadsheet below. Then write a new sentence of your own: ‘Digital projects help people when…’ and give your own reason.

Read the sheet. Chalk: 5 boxes × 10 pieces = 50. Pens: 3 × 12 = 36. Glue: 4 × 6 = 24. The formula =D2+D3+D4 adds 50 + 36 + 24 = 110 pieces. The fields are the column headings; each item is one record.

plan the steps of a talkflowchart

share with a groupmessaging service
Match the tool to the job. A flowchart plans the steps of a talk; a word processor writes a report; a database keeps records; a presentation tool shows slides; a messaging service shares messages with a group.
good planclear talkhonest data
An essential sentence. Habiba writes: ‘Digital projects help people when a good plan, a clear talk and honest data make an idea easy to share.’ She gives her own reason.
Class activity

Theme 4 test. Write one sentence for each: what the explorer’s company helped people do, what messaging services are for, what a database holds (with an example), a tool for making a presentation, and how a flowchart fits a project. Then do the sums: if Glue shows 5 boxes of 6 pieces, what is the new formula in D4 and its answer? Finish with your new essential sentence.

Practice
1
What did the explorer’s company help small business owners do?
2
What are messaging services used for?
3
In the lesson sheet, Pens are 3 boxes of 12 pieces. How many pieces?
4
What is the total of 50, 36 and 24 pieces?
