My rules as a user: online and offline

ICT P6 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 14–17
GoalState my own duties as an AI user and give advice for online and offline life.

Explanation

Users have duties too. Use AI tools to help yourself, other people and your community. Never use them to spy on people’s privacy, to cheat or to hurt anyone. There are worries about language tools. Some people use them to plagiarise, which means copying work and saying it is yours. They can spread misinformation. They can pretend to be a person, even a family member. So never hand in words that a tool wrote as if they were your own work, and ask your teacher when a tool may be used. If a message in a family member’s voice or writing asks for something strange, stay calm, ask a grown-up and check another way. You must look after yourself, even when a tool seems helpful. Check that the maker follows a code of ethics. Should AI have limits? That is an opinion question: give a reason and an example. Your ethics should be the same online and offline.

Notes on an invented AI tool. Name: Reading Helper, made by Sunrise Labs (both invented). How it works: it reads text aloud. Benefit: it helps pupils who find reading hard. Sign of an ethics code: the maker publishes its rules and explains its mistakes. A way it could help me: reading a notice aloud.
A message arrives that sounds like Karim’s cousin and asks for something strange in a hurry. Karim stays calm. He does not do it. He asks a grown-up, and they check with the cousin another way.

Poster outline: a title ‘Be kind, be honest, be careful’, and three tips with pictures: be kind to other people, tell the truth about whose work it is, protect your privacy.
Class activity

Advice poster. Make a poster for your family and friends: a title, four tips on using AI in a positive and ethical way, and a picture for each tip. Then write three sentences on this question: should AI have limits? Give one example.

Practice
1
Name two duties of people who use AI.
2
Why is handing in words written by a tool as your own work wrong?
3
How can you check whether the maker of an AI tool is trustworthy?
4
How are online ethics and offline ethics alike?
