Plan an idea that helps others
ICT P6 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 8–13
GoalPlan a helper idea for people of determination with five questions.
New words
feature · a special part of a product that makes it useful or differentuser · the person who will use a productpromote · to tell people about a product so they want to try itplan · a set of decisions made before you start
Explanation
A good idea starts with a plan. You can plan a helper for your school on a paper poster, with no computer at all. Answer five questions. First: who will it help? Choose a real need, such as a child who cannot hear the bell. Second: what will it do? Say it in one sentence. Third: what special feature will make it different from other tools? Fourth: is there one extra feature that could be added later? Fifth: how will you tell people about it, for example with a poster, a short talk or a drawing in the corridor? Keep the answers short and clear. When you present your plan, listen to your classmates. Their questions show what you forgot to explain.
Question
My answer (example)
1. Who will it help?
a pupil who cannot hear the school bell
2. What will it do?
flash a lamp when the bell rings
3. Special feature?
a different colour for break time and home time
4. One extra feature later?
a small buzz on the wrist
5. How will I tell people?
a poster at the school gate
Worked examples
Marwan plans a ‘talking label’ for the school library. It reads a book’s title aloud when a pupil who cannot see it touches the shelf. The user is a pupil with low vision.
Habiba’s poster has a big title, one clear picture and one short sentence. A classmate can read it from the back of the room. That is a good way to promote an idea.
Seif’s plan says: ‘It helps everybody.’ His teacher asks: ‘Who exactly?’ A plan is stronger when it names one clear user and one clear need.
Class activity
Plan your own helper idea on a sheet of paper. Draw five boxes and write the five questions. Answer each in one short line. Add a small drawing of your idea. Present it to a family member and ask: What is unclear?
