When food webs change
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
A drought dries up all the grass in a valley. Write what happens to a hare and to a fox that hunts hares. Use the words “then” and “because”.
Example: The hare has no food, then it leaves or starves, because it eats grass. The fox has fewer hares to eat, then it may go hungry or move.
2
In the energy game the grass starts with 24 squares. The hare gets half of them and the fox gets half of the hare’s. How many squares does the fox get?
Hare: 24 ÷ 2 = 12. Fox: 12 ÷ 2 = 6 squares.
3
Draw a coral reef home with five animals around it. Write one thing that could harm the reef and one thing people can do to protect it.
Answers differ, for example: harm: warm water or plastic; protect: use less single-use plastic.
4
Count the plastic bags, bottles and wrappers your family uses in two days. Write the total and one way to use fewer.
Answers differ. For example, 5 bags + 4 bottles + 7 wrappers = 16 items; use a cloth bag.
5
Write a claim, evidence and reasoning to answer: “How can plastic harm a food web?”
Claim: plastic can harm many links in a food web. Evidence: turtles eat bags and corals take in microplastics. Reasoning: animals that depend on harmed links also lose food or health.
