Term 2 review: Earth’s resources and patterns in the sky
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw the four spheres as four boxes with an arrow for one interaction between two of them. Explain it in one sentence.
Answers differ, for example: rain (atmosphere) fills the river (hydrosphere) that fish (biosphere) live in.
2
A home uses 150 L a day. A family saves 30 L a day with two new habits. How many litres do they save in 7 days? What is the new daily use?
30 × 7 = 210 L saved in 7 days. New use: 150 − 30 = 120 L a day.
3
Write a claim, evidence and reasoning to answer: how can we protect Earth’s water resources?
Claim: by using less, keeping it clean and cleaning used water. Evidence: shorter showers saved 80 L; treatment plants make used water fit for farms. Reasoning: less waste leaves more for all, and keeping pollution out of streams protects those downstream.
4
Earth turns 15° each hour. How far does it turn in 5 hours? In which direction do the stars seem to move?
5 × 15 = 75°. The stars seem to move from east to west.
5
Explain, for someone at home, why the Sun looks so bright but is not the brightest star. Include the word distance.
The Sun is a normal star that is very near. Other stars can give out more light, but they are so far away that they look faint.
